Court Sets July 3 to Rule on Gani Adams’ N5bn Defamation Suit Against Sunday Igboho

The Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has fixed July 3, 2025, as the date for delivering judgment in a N5 billion defamation case filed by Chief Gani Adams against popular Yoruba rights activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho.

The case, numbered M/1006/2024, is being handled by Justice O.T. Ademola-Salami at Court 15, located in Iyaganku, Ibadan. Adams, who holds the traditional title of Aareonakakanfo of Yorubaland and is also the National Coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), brought the lawsuit after accusing Igboho of making damaging claims and invading his right to privacy.

According to the details presented in court, Chief Gani Adams alleged that Igboho unlawfully recorded a private phone conversation involving him and another person without any form of permission. Adams’ legal team argued that this act was a clear breach of Section 37 of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, which protects the privacy of citizens.

Representing Adams, lawyer Sikiru Akinrele urged the court to consider the breach of privacy and the negative impact the alleged actions had on his client’s public image. Akinrele further requested the court to rule in favour of his client and grant all reliefs, including the payment of N5 billion in damages.

On the other side, Sunday Igboho’s lawyer, Mr. Junaid Sanusi, strongly opposed the claims. Sanusi presented a counter affidavit and written argument, noting several legal flaws in the application. One of his key points was that Adams did not personally sign the affidavit that backed his claims, which, he said, makes the application legally defective.

Sanusi also questioned the evidence surrounding the alleged phone recording. He asked the court to strike out the case entirely and award legal costs to his client.

After hearing both sides, Justice Ademola-Salami announced that judgment will be delivered on July 3, 2025.
