Cristiano Ronaldo received a Guinness World Record award before Portugal’s UEFA Nations League quarterfinal second-leg match against Denmark on Sunday, March 23. The award recognized him as the player with the most international wins, a historic milestone in his remarkable career.
The 40-year-old Portuguese star has played 218 matches for his national team and has now secured 133 victories, the highest for any player in international football. However, the official award was given for his 132nd win, which he achieved on November 15, 2024, in Portugal’s victory over Poland during the Nations League group stage.
Ronaldo’s international journey began in 2003 when he made his debut for Portugal. His first win with the national team came on August 20, 2003. Over the years, he has become Portugal’s most influential player, leading them to major tournament victories, including the 2016 UEFA European Championship and the 2019 Nations League title.
Portugal faced Denmark in a thrilling quarterfinal clash that ended 5-2 after extra time. Ronaldo had a mixed performance, missing a penalty but later scoring an important goal.
The match started with high intensity as Portugal was awarded a penalty early on when Ronaldo was fouled by Danish defender Patrick Dorgu. However, his shot was saved by goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, an unusual miss for the experienced forward. Despite this setback, Ronaldo bounced back in the second half, scoring his 136th international goal. His strike was crucial as it helped Portugal level the game at that moment.
Denmark fought back with Christian Eriksen adding another goal, but Portugal responded strongly. Francisco Trincão scored twice, and Gonçalo Ramos sealed the victory in extra time, securing Portugal’s place in the Nations League semifinals.
