C’River Governor Suspends Village Head, Council Members Over Alleged Misconduct

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has suspended Chief Okon Archibong, the Village Head of Esuk Utan, along with his council members. The suspension, which was announced in Calabar on Monday, came in response to allegations of misconduct and misuse of office by the traditional ruler and his council.

The governor’s decision was made public through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Nsa Gil. According to the statement, the allegations have sparked multiple petitions, prompting the need for immediate action.

Governor Otu has tasked the Calabar Municipal Traditional Rulers Council with thoroughly investigating the claims against Chief Archibong and his council. The council is expected to submit a detailed report, including its findings and recommendations, to the office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Chieftaincy Affairs within one week.

In the interim, the governor has instructed the Obutong Clan Council to establish a five-member committee to oversee the affairs of Esuk Utan Village until the investigation concludes.

“Report on findings and recommendations should be sent to the office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Chieftaincy Affairs within one week,” the statement read.
