Cross River Governor Denies Rift with National Assembly Members, Party Leaders

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has dismissed claims that he is in conflict with some members of the National Assembly, particularly Senator Asuquo Ekpeyong, who represents Cross River South.

Speaking to journalists in Calabar on Wednesday, the governor addressed the speculation, stating that he maintains a strong working relationship with both the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state and National Assembly members. He added that discussions about the 2027 elections are premature and not a priority at the moment.

Otu also made it clear that the decision on whether National Assembly members will be re-elected in 2027 lies in the hands of the people and not with him. “I hear all kinds of things like you hear, but I think they are all creations of the social media. I don’t have any issue with anybody, and my priority remains to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people,” he said.

Rumors of a rift have been circulating, with some reports suggesting that tensions exist between the governor and certain party leaders over political control ahead of the next election cycle. However, Otu dismissed these speculations, stating that his focus remains on governance and fulfilling his campaign promises to the people of Cross River.

He further noted that political distractions will not derail his administration’s commitment to development. The governor assured that he is working closely with party leaders and lawmakers to ensure that the state continues to progress.
