Customs Crack Down on Smugglers, Arrests 34 Illegal Migrants

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Joint Border Patrol Team has stepped up its efforts against illegal activities along the country’s border regions, resulting in significant arrests and seizures. Over the past month, the team apprehended 34 illegal migrants and confiscated a wide range of smuggled goods.

Among the intercepted items were 816 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 802 jerry cans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), 285 bales of used clothing, and several other contraband goods. The operation highlights the team’s commitment to safeguarding the nation’s economy and border security.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos, Deputy Comptroller Mohamed Shuaibu, who coordinates the border patrol team, credited their success to enhanced surveillance, strategic intelligence gathering, and continuous border patrols.

Shuaibu remarked, “In our unwavering commitment to combating smuggling, we are safeguarding Nigeria’s economy and ensuring national security. Our efforts to disrupt smuggling activities align with the Federal Government’s zero-tolerance stance on these crimes.”

The seized goods have a total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N556.43 million. Additionally, N8.02 million was generated from auctioning confiscated PMS that could not be stored due to its flammable nature.
