Customs Generates N45.7bn in Q1 2025

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Murtala Muhammed Command has recorded a significant revenue generation of N45.7 billion in the first quarter of 2025, surpassing last year’s Q1 performance. This is an increase of N276.9 million compared to the N45.4 billion earned in Q1 2024, representing a growth of 0.61 percent.

In a press conference held in Lagos on Wednesday, Comptroller Michael Awe, the Customs Area Controller for the Murtala Muhammed Command, provided details of the revenue performance and attributed the growth to improved operational strategies and enhanced stakeholder compliance. The increase, according to Awe, is a testament to the effective enforcement of trade regulations and the prompt addressing of revenue leakages.

“Through timely interventions, we were able to block revenue leakages, which significantly contributed to the increase in our revenue,” said Awe. He acknowledged the role of compliant traders and stakeholders in driving this success, noting that their continued cooperation had been key to achieving the improved figures.

Additionally, the command’s anti-smuggling efforts have proven fruitful, with several major seizures made during the quarter. Among the items seized were four packages of immigration camouflage uniforms, 19 packages of Motorola walkie-talkies, and three packages containing Colorado CAT leaves. The total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of these seized goods amounted to N132.4 million.

The successful seizures were made possible through intelligence sharing, constant vigilance by officers, and a rigorous profiling of high-risk shipments.

“Let me reaffirm that the command is committed to thwarting all forms of illegitimate trade through the Murtala Muhammed Area Command,” Awe said. “We shall enforce all applicable laws and regulations with the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.”
