Dangote Cement Plc has announced the investment of over $280 million to support President Bola Tinubu’s compressed natural gas (CNG) initiative, aimed at providing Nigeria with more affordable and environmentally friendly fuel options.
This major move by Dangote Cement includes investments in CNG trucks and infrastructure to help reduce carbon emissions and foster economic growth in line with the government’s vision for clean energy.
In a statement, Dangote Cement highlighted President Tinubu’s dedication to advancing CNG use across Nigeria. President Tinubu, known for his strong commitment to cleaner energy, has emphasized the need for a more sustainable energy source for Nigeria’s transportation sector.
His administration has encouraged private sector investments to develop the country’s CNG infrastructure and improve access to cleaner fuels.
A core part of President Tinubu’s plan is the distribution of one million free CNG conversion kits for vehicles transporting people, goods, and food. At a recent event, he stressed the importance of utilizing Nigeria’s vast natural gas resources in the transportation industry, describing CNG as essential for the country’s future.
“Utilising natural gas to power Nigeria’s transportation industry is the next way to go,” President Tinubu said, underlining a transformative shift in the country’s fuel consumption patterns.
As part of its support for this national drive, Dangote Cement’s Group Managing Director, Arvind Pathak, revealed that the company’s investment aims to build an all-CNG truck fleet.
According to Pathak, this transition to CNG vehicles will allow the company to operate with minimal environmental impact and contribute to Nigeria’s goal of reducing carbon emissions.
“By mid- 2026, Dangote Cement aims to operate a fleet predominantly powered by CNG. To facilitate this transformation, we are investing in expanding our CNG fuelling infrastructure, ensuring that our growing fleet has reliable access to CNG as our fuel.”
“We are keeping our eyes on the ball to ensure that we do not miss our target dates of full compliance,” he added.
President/Chief Executive, Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote also noted: “In this pursuit of transition to clean energy, we are optimistic of a remarkable accomplishment by President Bola Tinubu, as he has taken the lead in the nation’s drive towards energy efficiency.
“This presupposes private sector intervention to support this noble idea initiated by the President.”
