The death toll from the tragic tanker explosion in Jigawa State has risen to 181, with 210 families displaced, according to Governor Umar Namadi.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, the governor provided an update on the devastating incident that occurred last week. He also disclosed that 80 people are currently hospitalized due to injuries sustained from the explosion.
“The situation, as of today, is that we have about 181 people who died, about 80 people in the hospitals, and about 210 families affected,” Namadi said after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The incident happened on October 15, when a petrol tanker en route from Kano to Yobe overturned near Majiya village in Taura Local Government Area.
The tanker spilled its fuel into a drainage, which prompted locals to gather and attempt to collect the leaking fuel.
Unfortunately, a fire ignited the spilled fuel, causing a massive explosion that claimed numerous lives and left many injured. Many of those who were at the scene were severely burned, with some dying instantly, while others were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The explosion led to widespread damage in the village, leaving many families displaced. Governor Namadi expressed deep concern for the affected communities and emphasized that both the state and federal governments are working together to address the aftermath of the disaster.
In response to the tragedy, President Tinubu directed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, to lead a delegation to Jigawa shortly after the incident.
The team included prominent figures such as the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar, and the Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali, along with other senior officials.
Governor Namadi thanked President Tinubu for the prompt action, which provided immediate relief and support to the affected people.
“I came to see Mr. President… to thank him for sending a delegation to the state immediately after the incident,” Namadi said, expressing appreciation on behalf of the people of Jigawa. He added that the President’s gesture was well-received and had a positive impact on the recovery efforts.
