Death Toll in Jigawa Tanker Explosion Rises to 153

The death toll in the tragic tanker explosion in Majia Local Government Area of Jigawa State has risen to 153, with over 100 people hospitalized. This devastating incident, which occurred on October 17, 2024, has shocked the entire region.

The explosion took place when a fuel tanker burst into flames, leading to a massive fire that engulfed the surrounding area. Initially, it was reported that 105 people had lost their lives, while 70 others sustained various injuries.

However, according to a recent statement by the police spokesperson, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the number of fatalities has sadly increased to 153.

Adam also confirmed that those who perished in the explosion have been laid to rest in a mass burial. The injured victims, who suffered severe burns and other injuries, are receiving medical treatment at several hospitals across the state. These include Aminu Kano, Jahun, Nguru, Hadejia, and Gumel hospitals.

Governor Mallam Umar Namadi expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, offering condolences to the grieving families and showing solidarity with the injured.

The Governor swiftly visited the scene of the accident and participated in the funeral prayer for the victims.

He remarked, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims during this painful time. We stand in solidarity with those who have lost loved ones and those injured in this tragic incident.”

The state government, under Governor Namadi’s leadership, has promised to cover the medical expenses of all the injured victims. The Governor assured that the government would provide the necessary support to the affected families.

He also emphasized the importance of learning from this tragedy to prevent similar incidents in the future. “The affected families will receive the needed assistance as we continue to work on preventing such tragedies,” Governor Namadi stated.

The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) provided the latest figures, indicating that 107 people have been confirmed dead so far, while 57 others are still receiving treatment for severe burns and other injuries.

Governor Namadi also took the opportunity to urge the public to prioritize safety during emergencies. He advised people to avoid gathering at accident scenes to prevent further harm and potential loss of life.
