Defections: I Won’t Abandon PDP, Says Makinde

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has reaffirmed his loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), insisting he will remain with the party despite rising defections among politicians, including governors.

Speaking on Wednesday during the official inauguration of the newly elected PDP South West zonal executive at the party’s zonal office in Ibadan, Makinde stated clearly that the party still connects with the Nigerian people and he would not walk away from it.

He addressed concerns raised by party members and observers about the recent wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). According to him, such movements were not a major concern.

“People have been asking us as leaders of this party that a lot of people are decamping, even governors, and some others are threatening to decamp and all of that. And they said, look, where is this party going?

“Well, I have good news; I said to the people that we will not be bothered until hunger has decamped to the ruling party, APC,” Makinde said.

He added that hunger and suffering still dominate the lives of many Nigerians, and it is these citizens who will make their voices heard in the 2027 general elections.

Makinde also noted that the PDP has strong structures that have endured over the years, even after losing power at the federal level in 2015.

“I read an analysis where they said the PDP has been building strong men but not strong institutions. I beg to differ,” he said, adding that the party’s resilience is evident in how it continues to operate actively, unlike other parties.

He further stated that PDP remains the only party in Nigeria that holds consistent meetings at the national level, including over 300 National Executive Council (NEC) meetings. “Have you heard about APC holding South-West congress?” he asked rhetorically.

Makinde assured the newly inaugurated South-West zonal executive members of his full support, along with that of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke. “We will support this Exco to deliver on its mandate,” he affirmed.

Adeleke, who also spoke at the event, described the emergence of the new zonal leaders as a positive sign for the region. He encouraged them to foster unity, build inclusive structures, and focus on reconciliation.

In his first address as PDP National Vice Chairman (South West), Engr. Kamorudeen Ajisafe praised the peaceful conduct of the election. He promised to work with state chairmen to strengthen the party and secure more wins in upcoming elections.

“The struggle to win the presidency in 2027 would be championed from the South West,” he said.

Former Ogun State PDP governorship candidate, Chief Ladi Adebutu, also shared his appreciation for the peaceful process and praised the leadership of both Makinde and Adeleke. He urged party members to remain united and committed.
