The Defence Headquarters has confirmed a deadly ambush by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists targeting troops conducting stabilization operations in Gubio Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State. The incident led to intense fighting, resulting in significant casualties on both sides.
According to a statement released by Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, five soldiers lost their lives, while ten others sustained injuries. Additionally, four soldiers remain unaccounted for. Despite the losses, the military reported neutralizing over 30 insurgents, many of whom escaped with serious injuries.
“The attack resulted in the destruction of one gun truck, three TCVs, and an excavator,” General Buba revealed. Reinforcement troops, supported by air components, were quickly dispatched to pursue the fleeing insurgents and regain control of the area.
Local sources shared further details, stating that the insurgents attempted multiple assaults on a special military unit stationed in Kareto, a community in Gubio LGA. One of these attacks, which occurred on August 16, resulted in the deaths of 18 soldiers, with several others injured. However, six insurgents were also killed in that engagement.
The special forces had been stationed in Kareto to facilitate the return of displaced villagers by constructing protective trenches when the terrorists launched their offensive. Despite the recent challenges, the Defence Headquarters emphasized its commitment to eliminating threats and ensuring the region’s stability.
