Don’t be Scared of Military Men in Uniform – Defense Chief tells Nigerians

The Nigerian military has reassured citizens that they should not feel afraid when they see uniformed personnel, as their primary duty is to protect the people. Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole, the Chief of Defence Civil-Military Relations at the Defence Headquarters, made this statement during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday.

He noted that military personnel are trained to safeguard not just the nation’s territorial integrity but also the people living in it. “People should not feel scared when they see people in uniform; the men in uniform are meant to protect you. That sensitisation, even from the depot in Zaria, from the NDA to the NDC, is there,” he said.

Rear Admiral Bankole further described a career in the military as a noble one, emphasizing that members of the armed forces play a crucial role in ensuring national security and societal well-being. He added that under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, efforts are being made to strengthen the relationship between the military and civilians, aiming to earn the trust and respect of the people.

Addressing recent concerns, Bankole mentioned that the Defence Headquarters is currently reviewing an incident involving some soldiers at the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) that occurred a few weeks ago. He assured Nigerians that appropriate disciplinary actions would be taken against anyone found guilty of misconduct.

“What happened at Ikeja Disco is being viewed seriously at the Defence Headquarters and headquarters of the Nigerian Air Force. Whatever sanctions need to be meted out will be,” he said. He also pointed out that the actions captured in the video do not reflect the true values of the Nigerian military, and any underlying issues between the Air Force and IKEDC are being addressed.

Rear Admiral Bankole also noted that the military is increasing efforts to educate the public about its role and responsibilities. He stressed that a strong relationship between the military and civilians is essential, as security agencies rely on intelligence from the public to effectively carry out their duties.
