The Lagos State House of Assembly has cautioned its impeached Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, against actions that could cause political instability or disrupt the legislative body. This warning follows Obasa’s public remarks disputing the legality of his impeachment.
On Saturday, Obasa, who had just returned from the United States, addressed his supporters, stating that his removal as Speaker did not comply with due process.
However, the Assembly released a statement, e-signed by Ogundipe Olukayode, affirming their support for the newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, and defending the impeachment decision made on January 13.
“It is imperative to clarify that over two-thirds of the members of the Lagos State House of Assembly are solidly united behind the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda. We stand by the decision taken to impeach Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa and we shall defend our position to the latter,” the statement read.
The lawmakers noted their commitment to upholding good governance and fostering collaboration with other arms of government. They insisted that the decision to impeach Obasa was in accordance with constitutional provisions, emphasizing that all members of the Assembly have the right to replace any principal officer when deemed necessary.
Olukayode further criticized Obasa’s recent comments and behavior, describing them as inappropriate and urging him to prioritize the state’s peace and stability.
“I appeal to the former Speaker to toe the line of peace and harmony as being followed by others, as the current intransigent posture will heat the polity and not augur well. Any attempt to heat the polity will be resisted by the majority of distinguished members who unanimously elected Rt. Hon. Meranda,” he warned.
The Assembly also pledged to protect its integrity and ensure peace across Lagos. “Peace we want in Lagos, and peace we will achieve,” the statement concluded.
