A Zambian police officer is at the center of a controversy after allegedly releasing 13 detainees in Lusaka while reportedly intoxicated. The incident, which took place on New Year’s Eve, has raised concerns over security lapses within the police force.
According to reports, Inspector Titus Phiri, stationed at Leonard Cheelo police station, is said to have consumed alcohol before taking custody of the cell keys from Constable Serah Banda.
While in possession of the keys, Inspector Phiri allegedly unlocked the cells, allowing individuals detained for serious offenses such as assault, robbery, and burglary to walk free.
