E-Money Warns Nigerians to Stop Spraying Naira at Parties After EFCC Interrogation

Popular Lagos socialite and businessman, Emeka Okonkwo, better known by his nickname E-Money, has issued a stern message to Nigerians regarding the handling of currency during social events. In a post shared on his Instagram account on Thursday, May 1st, E-Money publicly advised citizens to avoid spraying the Naira—or any currency—at parties, warning that such actions are illegal and can attract legal consequences.

E-Money notes that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has repeatedly reminded the public that defacing or mishandling currency in any way is a punishable offense under Nigerian law. He urged people to find better ways to show appreciation at events without breaking the law.

“Let’s celebrate responsibly and avoid fines. Respect our currency!” he wrote.

In the same message, he advised that people who wish to gift money at parties should place it in a bowl, basket, or container provided in front of the celebrant, rather than throwing or dropping it on the ground. He further noted, “If you must give money at a party, make sure you put it in a basket or in a bowl or container in front of the person at the party. Don’t drop any currency on the floor.”

This caution comes shortly after reports surfaced that E-Money himself had been invited and questioned by the EFCC over alleged acts involving the spraying of both the Nigerian Naira and U.S. Dollar at events. Though the full details of the questioning remain unclear, sources say it relates directly to the violation of currency laws during public gatherings.

The EFCC has consistently issued warnings about the misuse of money at social events, including spraying, mutilation, or stepping on the currency. The agency continues to remind the public that these actions are not just socially frowned upon but are also legally unacceptable.
