Last Thursday at Benin Airport, an inspector from the Nigeria Police Force, Edo State Command, lost his life during a violent outbreak. The violence erupted following the arrival of reinstated Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, from Abuja.
The pro-democracy group, Movement For Democracy, has extended its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased officer, Inspector Onu Ako. In a statement released on Monday, the group’s convener, Osaze Samuel, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and criticized the actions of the APC candidate, attributing the violence to his political misconduct.
Part of the statement highlighted the group’s concerns: “This loss, a direct consequence of the political misconduct of APC candidate Monday Okpebholo, is a testament to the grave consequences of political recklessness introduced by the senator.” The statement continued to criticize the APC candidate and his handling of the situation, indicating that such political behavior puts the lives of innocent citizens at risk.
The incident occurred amidst a mini rally at the airport, which was seen as an inappropriate response to the court’s judgment favoring the former deputy governor. The Movement for Democracy emphasized that the situation should have been handled through legal processes rather than public demonstrations. They noted, “Rather than respecting the security advice provided by the Commissioner of Police, Edo State, and opting for a more discreet approach, the APC candidate chose to lead a public procession.”
Furthermore, the group highlighted the role of Philip Shaibu, accusing him of collaborating with Okpebholo in acts that jeopardized public safety. The group’s statement described Shaibu as “known for his violent tendencies and disregard for authority,” suggesting that both individuals prioritized personal and political gain over public well-being.
The Movement for Democracy also commended the Nigerian Bar Association and the citizens of Edo State for condemning the violent behavior. They called for accountability, urging that the APC candidate be held responsible for the events leading to Inspector Ako’s death.
“It is imperative that the APC candidate be held accountable for the actions that led to this officer’s death. He must be called upon to explain his role in this tragic incident and to account for his blatant disregard for security protocols,” the statement added.
The group concluded by urging the people of Edo State to reject the APC and its candidate, asserting that such leadership is unfit for a progressive and civilized society. “We call upon all well-meaning citizens of Edo State to reject the APC and its candidate. It is clear that this group is unfit to lead Edo State or any progressive and civilized society,” the statement concluded.
