Edo Governor Approves N1bn Loan for Market Women

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved N1 billion in soft loans for market women across the state. The loan initiative aims to support their businesses and improve their financial well-being.

Governor Okpebholo made this announcement during an event held on Friday to commemorate International Women’s Day (IWD). While addressing the gathering, he commended the resilience and dedication of Edo women, acknowledging their vital role in the state’s economic and social development.

He stated, “Since I assumed office as Governor of Edo State, this is the first event that has been very colourful. I have been coming to the Festival Hall in Government House but have never seen a colourful event like this.”

The governor further noted the importance of women in governance and economic progress, explaining that the approval of the N1 billion loan was an easy decision for him. He said, “We can actually do nothing as men without women, and that was why when a memo came before me on soft loan approval, I quickly approved N1 billion for our market women.”

According to Okpebholo, the disbursement process is already in motion. The state government is currently engaging with financial institutions to ensure the funds are properly allocated to beneficiaries. He assured that the loan is exclusively for Edo women and will be credited directly to their accounts.

The event also featured remarks from the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Edesili Okpebholo. She encouraged Edo women to always speak up and ensure their voices are heard. She noted that women should never be silenced, sidelined, or discouraged from participating in matters that affect their lives.

During the celebration, Anani commended Governor Okpebholo for taking concrete steps to promote gender equality in Edo State. She noted that no woman should be left behind in the push for justice, equal opportunities, and economic empowerment.

“We are all gathered here to celebrate the achievements of women and renew the call for a transformative change. The celebration reminds us of the incredible progress made by women and the world,” she said.

Speaking on this year’s IWD theme, “Accelerate Action,” she stressed the need for immediate and collective efforts to address gender inequality. She urged stakeholders to work towards eliminating barriers that continue to hinder women’s advancement, including systemic inequality, economic disparities, and violence against women and girls.

The event, which was organized by the Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, brought together women from various sectors of the economy.

International Women’s Day is an annual celebration recognizing the achievements of women worldwide while also serving as a platform to advocate for gender equality and women’s empowerment.
