Edo Govt, PDP Clash Over Uromi Killings

Tensions are rising in Edo State as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the state government exchange accusations over the killing of 16 travelers in Uromi.

The incident has sparked political controversy, with the opposition blaming Governor Monday Okpebholo for a breakdown in security, while the government insists it is taking decisive action.

In a statement, PDP’s publicity secretary, Chris Nehikhare, noted that the classification of the perpetrators as an illegal vigilante group shows that the state lacks a clear security framework under Okpebholo’s administration.

“The suspension of the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP. Friday Ibadin (Rtd.), is a clear admission by the government that the security architecture of the state has failed,” Nehikhare stated.

He also criticized the administration for allowing unregistered vigilante groups to operate, arguing that the failure to regulate and train these groups properly contributed to the killings. The PDP called for an audit of the state’s security system to eliminate unauthorized groups and ensure those responsible for the attack face justice.

Responding through his spokesperson, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo rejected the PDP’s claims, accusing the party of politicizing a tragic event instead of offering constructive solutions.

“The classification of the perpetrators as an illegal vigilante group and the subsequent suspension of the Edo State Security Corps Commander, CP Friday Ibadin (Rtd.), is a clear indication that this government does not condone lawlessness or impunity unlike previous administrations,” Okpebholo’s spokesperson stated.

He assured the public that the state government had already launched a full-scale investigation into the Uromi killings. Arrests have begun, and those responsible will be prosecuted accordingly.

“Edo’s security is a priority, and no amount of political manipulation will derail this administration’s commitment to that goal,” he added.
