The Edo State Government has begun demolishing buildings linked to kidnapping activities in an effort to curb crime and protect residents. The exercise, which took place in Illeh, Esan West Local Government Area, and Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area, was led by security personnel under the supervision of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Akhere Paul.
Mr. Akhere noted that the demolition followed legal provisions aimed at deterring criminals. He stated that Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration is determined to rid the state of criminal elements and warned property owners to be cautious when renting out their buildings.
“This house has been used for criminal activities. They keep kidnapped victims here, and a raid by men of the Nigerian Police Force recovered some dangerous weapons as well. According to the new law on kidnapping recently passed by the Edo State House of Assembly and signed by Governor Monday Okpebholo, any house found being used for kidnapping activities will be demolished,” he said.
He urged landlords to thoroughly screen potential tenants by verifying their identities and employment status before renting out their properties.
The Commander of the Special Task Force, SP Michael Anetor, also spoke on the operation, stating that the demolition would serve as a warning to others involved in criminal activities. He encouraged Edo residents to assist in the fight against kidnapping by reporting any suspicious activities to law enforcement.
“A safer and secured Edo is the duty of all,” Anetor noted.
Two suspects, Utubor Uchenna and Felix Ebama, who were arrested in connection with the case, admitted to being part of a seven-member gang. They revealed that they had been involved in several high-profile kidnappings in Edo Central, with their most recent operation bringing in a ransom of ₦10 million.
Uchenna explained that their last victim was targeted because of his luxury car. The individual, along with a lady, was kidnapped but later released unharmed after the ransom was paid.
Security forces in Edo State have recently intensified efforts to dismantle criminal networks. Several hideouts have been raided, and numerous suspects have been arrested and handed over to the police for prosecution.
