Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested 74 suspected internet fraudsters in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The suspects were caught on Monday at Joyous Hotel located in Nyanya, a town on the outskirts of the city. According to the EFCC, the operation was carried out based on reliable intelligence that linked the individuals to online scams and other cybercrime activities.

In a statement issued by EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, it was revealed that several items were found and taken during the raid. These include 86 mobile phones, a small rifle, and three motorcycles. The EFCC notes that these items are believed to have been used in carrying out fraudulent activities.

The arrest followed weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering, which eventually led the operatives to the hotel in Nyanya. Sources close to the operation said that most of the suspects were caught off guard as the EFCC stormed the hotel early in the morning, preventing many from escaping.

The EFCC also noted that investigations are currently ongoing and once complete, all 74 suspects will be taken to court to face appropriate legal charges. “They will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded,” the EFCC statement read.

Photos released by the EFCC showed a group of young men seated on the ground, surrounded by law enforcement agents, as the confiscated items were also displayed.

The anti-corruption agency has continued to increase its efforts against internet crime, especially among young people, as the country faces growing concerns about the rise in cyber-related offenses.

Joyous Hotel has not made any public comment regarding the raid or whether it had prior knowledge of the illegal activities going on within its premises. Residents in the area expressed shock over the news, stating that the hotel had previously seemed like a quiet place.
