EFCC Chairman Honors Slain Officer with Posthumous Award

Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has posthumously honored Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC, ASE II Aminu Sahabi, for his bravery.

The award was presented during a condolence visit to the officer’s family in Sokoto on Friday, February 7, 2025.

Sahabi lost his life on January 17, 2025, in Awka, Anambra State, while on an official duty to arrest suspected internet fraudsters. His tragic death was met with deep sorrow within the EFCC and the law enforcement community.

Olukoyede was accompanied on the visit by EFCC’s Director of Finance and Accounts, Ahmed Pate, Acting Director of the Sokoto Zonal Directorate, Nwanneka Nwokike, and other senior officials of the commission. Addressing the grieving family at their residence in the Gawon Nama area of Sokoto, he assured them that the EFCC shares in their loss.

“As a commission, we share in the pains and grief of the loss, but we cannot question the time that the Lord calls us home. The late Aminu was a gallant officer full of promise and in the services of his fatherland when he met with the tragic incident. Indeed, Allah gives and Allah takes,” Olukoyede stated.

He further assured the family that the perpetrators of the crime would not escape justice. “I am personally here to assure you that his sacrifice will never be forgotten nor will those accused of the heinous act of his murder be allowed to go free. They must and they will face the full wrath of the law,” he said.

To honor Sahabi’s sacrifice, Olukoyede presented a posthumous award for bravery and a condolence letter from the EFCC and the Federal Government to the bereaved family.

He also pledged continuous support, stating, “Going forward, I want to assure you that the family will not be forgotten as I will make time to visit intermittently because for us in the EFCC, we are a family. We have finished processing the benefits of the late officer and will be released to the next of kin immediately.”

In response, Justice Mohammed Shuaibu, speaking on behalf of the family, expressed gratitude for the EFCC’s support. He recalled how the commission assisted in transporting Sahabi’s remains for burial and acknowledged their decision to name a building at the EFCC Academy in Abuja after him.

“I was literally on the phone with the Chairman consecutively after the incident, and we also saw the delegation of the EFCC during the burial of our son led by the secretary to the commission,” Shuaibu stated.

He further added, “As a family, we also express our gratitude to the family for naming a building at the EFCC Academy, Abuja after our son to immortalize his sacrifice.”

After the condolence visit, Olukoyede proceeded to the EFCC Sokoto Zonal Directorate, where he inspected a guard of honor and held meetings with officers of the commission.
