Eid-el-Kabir: Emir Sanusi Walks Over 1km to Lead Prayers in Kano

The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, made a significant appearance on Friday by walking over one kilometre from his palace to the Eid prayer ground in Kano. This happened during this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration, drawing large attention from residents and worshippers alike.

Instead of riding a horse as is usually done during such festive events, Emir Sanusi chose to walk the distance from the Kofar Kudu Palace to the prayer ground at Kofar Mata. The decision was seen as symbolic and practical, especially in light of past security concerns.

Earlier this year, during the Eid-el-Fitr celebration, the Emir had participated in the usual traditional horseback procession. However, the event turned tragic when his entourage was attacked on their return journey, leading to the death of one person. Since then, public attention on his movements during religious events has been high.

State security agencies have also continued to warn against any sallah durbar activities. They maintain that the ban remains active because of existing threats. As a result, traditional displays during festivals have been limited.

After leading the two-rakat Eid prayer, Emir Sanusi delivered a sermon. He noted the importance of peace and unity in the state, and urged the people of Kano to work closely with security personnel. He specifically called on the public to help curb the increasing problem of thuggery in the city.

Among those who attended the prayer were Kano State Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, Secretary to the State Government, Umar Faruq, members of the State Executive Council, respected traditional leaders, and a large crowd of worshippers.

On the return trip to the palace, Emir Sanusi did not walk but was driven in his car. He was accompanied by a large crowd of supporters who chose to walk alongside his vehicle, showing their admiration and loyalty.
