Eid-el-Kabir: ‘Save Nigeria From Crisis’ – Northern CAN Urges Leaders

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), covering the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has urged Nigerian leaders to take serious and immediate steps to fix the country’s problems. This appeal comes as Muslims in Nigeria and around the world prepare to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir, one of the most important festivals in Islam.

The group released a statement on Thursday, calling on leaders at all levels to stop making empty promises and start taking visible action. The statement was signed by Rev. Joseph John Hayab, Chairman of Northern CAN.

According to the statement, Nigerians are living in fear due to increasing violence, economic hardship, and widespread unrest. It warns that if these issues are not quickly dealt with, the country could fall into even deeper trouble.

“Our leaders must act in obedience to their constitutional duty and moral obligation to protect the lives and dignity of every Nigerian,” the group said.

Northern CAN used the example of Eid-el-Kabir, which honors Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice for God, to remind leaders that true leadership often requires personal sacrifice. They called on both leaders and citizens to show greater commitment to the country’s unity and well-being.

“This season calls for both leaders and citizens to demonstrate renewed faith, unity, and responsibility toward the nation,” the association noted.

They pointed out that many Nigerians are losing hope as they face rising insecurity, job losses, and a high cost of living. According to them, words alone are not enough anymore.

“It is no longer enough to issue statements or make promises. The government must urgently remedy the conditions that have cast doubt on its commitment to the people,” the statement read.

Northern CAN stressed the need for leaders to rebuild trust by taking clear steps to improve daily life for citizens. They also asked all Nigerians to pray for peace, help those in need, and stay united during the Eid celebrations.

“We urge all religious and community leaders to continue promoting peaceful coexistence and avoid statements or actions that may deepen our divisions,” they added.

In closing, Northern CAN offered warm greetings to Muslims across the country: “May Allah accept your prayers and sacrifices, and may this season inspire true leadership, selflessness, and a renewed sense of purpose across our land.”
