The Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, has approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 for public sector workers in the state, marking a significant milestone in labor relations. This development was announced after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the state government and representatives of organized labor unions.
According to a statement by Yinka Oyebode, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, the new wage structure will take effect from December 1, 2024. The Head of Service, Dr. Folakemi Olomojobi, signed the agreement on behalf of the government, while labor union leaders represented the workers.
Dr. Olomojobi commended Governor Oyebanji for his dedication to improving workers’ welfare. She described him as a “worker-friendly governor” and appreciated the labor leaders for their cooperation throughout the negotiations. Olomojobi also thanked the workers for their patience and trust in the government.
“This committee has taken not less than eight weeks to deliberate on the minimum wage for Ekiti State,” she noted, highlighting the challenges faced during negotiations. “Mr. Governor bent forward and backwards to accommodate our yearnings, and today, we have agreed on the minimum wage to be paid in Ekiti State.”
Labor union leaders, including Kolapo Olatunde of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Sola Adigun of the Trade Union Congress, and Femi Ajoloko of the Joint Negotiating Council, praised the governor’s commitment to the workforce. They urged the state to ensure swift implementation of the new wage structure to alleviate workers’ financial burdens amid the prevailing economic challenges.
Taiwo Olatunbosun, Commissioner for Information, described the agreement as a testament to Governor Oyebanji’s passion for civil servants’ welfare, emphasizing that it demonstrates his commitment to addressing their concerns.
