President Bola Tinubu has commended the National Assembly for approving the emergency rule in Rivers State, describing it as a necessary step to restore stability. The approval follows a prolonged political crisis in the oil-rich state, which, according to the President, posed a significant threat to Nigeria’s economic progress.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu noted that the decision by the lawmakers reflected a commitment to national security and public welfare. The statement, titled ‘President Tinubu Salutes National Assembly for Patriotic Stand on Rivers State Emergency Proclamation,’ acknowledged the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and other legislators for prioritizing the interests of the people over political differences.
Tinubu pointed out that lawmakers had carefully reviewed classified security reports before arriving at their decision. He noted that intervention was necessary to prevent the situation from worsening.
“The crisis in Rivers State was at a perilous tipping point, threatening the security of vital oil and gas installations and undermining the national economy and the significant progress we have made in the reforms initiated since our administration commenced in May 2023,” Tinubu remarked.
He further explained that the deteriorating governance, threats to federal economic assets, and increasing risks of violence left the government with no choice but to act swiftly.
“This emergency measure is a lifeline to safeguard livelihoods, secure critical infrastructure, and restore democratic accountability,” he added.
The President assured Nigerians that the six-month emergency rule would give the newly appointed Sole Administrator the authority to restore order, repair governance structures, and engage conflicting parties in dialogue. He reiterated his administration’s dedication to working closely with the National Assembly to ensure lasting peace, economic stability, and fair development across the country.
“Today’s decision exemplifies what our nation can achieve when unity of purpose and patriotism guide the action of leaders. We remain steadfast in pursuing a safer, more prosperous Nigeria—one where every citizen’s potential is safeguarded and nurtured,” Tinubu said.
