The 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, has decided to cancel this year’s Eid-el-Fitr Durbar celebration due to security concerns in the state. The announcement was made on Wednesday night at his Nasarawa Mini Palace in Kano.
The Durbar, a grand traditional festival held during Eid celebrations, was expected to mark the Emir’s fifth year on the throne. However, he noted that after consulting with Islamic clerics, community elders, key stakeholders, and members of his council, he made the difficult decision to call off the event in order to maintain peace.
Emir Bayero explained that the unity and safety of Kano’s residents are more important than holding the Durbar. He urged the people of Kano to use the Eid period to strengthen family bonds and celebrate in a peaceful and harmonious manner.
“The peaceful coexistence of the people takes precedence over the Durbar celebration,” the Emir stated while addressing journalists.
Kano has recently experienced political tensions surrounding the emirship, with concerns that the ongoing dispute could lead to unrest if not properly handled. The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has also warned that the situation could escalate into anarchy if authorities do not take necessary measures to resolve the issue.
In his address, Emir Bayero prayed for Allah’s blessings and mercy during the sacred period of Ramadan. He expressed hope that the people of Kano would receive forgiveness and divine favor.
