In Katsina, youths took to the streets to express their frustration over the current economic hardship, leading to the destruction of a vehicle belonging to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). This incident also resulted in significant damage to public properties.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the unrest began after the protest organized by the group “Struggle for Good Governance” concluded. Despite the end of the initial protest, a faction of the youth continued to roam the streets, escalating the situation.
Buhari Hamisu, the spokesman for the NSCDC Command in Katsina, reported that the NSCDC vehicle, which had developed a fault and was left on the road, became a target for the protesters. “When the protesters arrived in the area, they set the vehicle ablaze and fled,” Hamisu stated.
The damage did not stop there. The protesters proceeded to vandalize several public properties across the city. They specifically targeted street lights, stripping them of their cables and other components. Additionally, they caused destruction to drainages and culverts, removing essential rods and parts.
Despite these incidents, Alhaji Faruq Jobe, the acting Governor of Katsina State, emphasized that the protests in the state had been mostly peaceful compared to the violent outbreaks reported in other regions. Addressing journalists on Thursday about the nationwide hunger protests, Jobe praised the residents of Katsina for their peaceful conduct. He attributed the relatively calm situation to the government’s proactive engagement with stakeholders.
Jobe urged parents to guide their children away from participating in violent activities. He then expressed his gratitude to the people for maintaining order and called for sustained peace.
