The Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nandap, has announced that individuals supporting the #EndBadGovernance protests from abroad are now under surveillance. These individuals will be detained if they attempt to enter Nigeria.
This statement was made on Tuesday during a joint news conference held in Abuja. The event was organized by Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, and included the heads of various security agencies and Service Chiefs at the Defence Headquarters.
“We have identified some diaspora sponsors; they are on our watch list,” Nandap stated. “Any attempt they make to come into the country, we will be notified and they will be picked up and handed to the appropriate authority.”
Nandap highlighted that the NIS has increased the deployment of officers at both land borders and airports to ensure strict monitoring of entry points. The goal is to prevent any external influence on the ongoing protests.
Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, also addressed the media, revealing that the police have identified several sponsors but chose not to disclose further details. He mentioned that some of these individuals’ bank accounts have been frozen and noted that many of them are based overseas.
Moreover, the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), represented by the agency’s spokesperson, Mr. Peter Afunanya, affirmed that the DSS is actively monitoring the situation. He also indicated that the DSS is collaborating with the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit to identify more individuals involved in funding the protests.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the briefing followed a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and the security chiefs to discuss the recent violence associated with the protests.
