President Bola Tinubu has condemned the renewed outbreak of violence in Plateau State that claimed over 40 lives. Speaking through a statement released on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said the cycle of attacks must be stopped immediately.
“We cannot allow this devastation and the tit-for-tat attacks to continue. Enough is enough,” the President declared, urging the Plateau State leadership to take decisive action in restoring peace.
The statement, titled ‘President Tinubu condemns latest attack in Plateau, charges Governor Mutfwang to resolve underlying communal issues’, detailed the President’s grief over the recent tragedy and his deep concern for the long-standing crisis in the region.
Tinubu extended his sympathy to the state’s governor, Caleb Mutfwang, and all affected families. He described the killings as unacceptable and noted that such loss of lives due to ethnic and religious tensions should no longer be tolerated.
He said, “The ongoing violence between communities in Plateau State, rooted in misunderstandings between different ethnic and religious groups, must cease.”
The President urged the Plateau State government to not only address the criminal acts but also to find lasting answers to the causes of the unrest. He noted that the violence, which has lingered for more than twenty years, requires urgent and sincere efforts to resolve the root issues.
“These problems have been with us for more than two decades. We can no longer ignore the underlying issues,” he said. “It is time to tackle them fairly and find a lasting solution.”
Tinubu said he had previously spoken with Governor Mutfwang and offered suggestions that could help bring long-term peace to the troubled areas.
He also appealed to religious, community, and political leaders across the state and country to unite in breaking the chain of revenge killings that continue to damage communities.
“I have instructed security agencies to thoroughly investigate this crisis and identify those responsible for orchestrating these violent acts,” Tinubu added.
Reaffirming his administration’s support, the President said the federal government is ready to work closely with Plateau authorities to promote peace and encourage healing.
“The Federal Government remains committed to supporting Governor Mutfwang and the Plateau State government in promoting dialogue, fostering social cohesion, and ensuring accountability—crucial steps towards permanently resolving the conflict in Plateau,” the statement concluded.
