EPL: Liverpool Dominates Ipswich, as Arsenal Overcome Controversial Red Card to Beat Wolves

Premier League leaders Liverpool triumphed over Ipswich with an impressive 4-1 victory at Anfield, while Arsenal survived a dramatic red card situation to secure a 1-0 win at Wolves, keeping their title chase alive.

Liverpool’s commanding performance was marked by Cody Gakpo’s brace, as the team continued their pursuit of the English title, maintaining a six-point lead over second-placed Arsenal. The Reds took control of the match early, with Dominik Szoboszlai opening the scoring in the 11th minute. The Hungarian midfielder’s strike came after Ibrahima Konaté set him up, sending the ball past Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton.

Mohamed Salah doubled the lead in the 35th minute, smashing in his 23rd goal across all competitions this season. This goal was also significant as it marked Salah’s 100th Premier League goal at Anfield. Gakpo then sealed Ipswich’s fate in the final minutes of the first half. After Szoboszlai’s shot was parried by Walton, Gakpo pounced to score just before halftime. He added a second goal in the 66th minute, heading in a cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Ipswich, struggling near the bottom of the table, managed only a consolation goal in stoppage time from Jacob Greaves. Despite the defeat, Ipswich’s poor defensive form, having conceded 10 goals in their last two games, continued to be a major concern. Liverpool’s dominant win was their 16th from 22 league games, keeping them on track for their first English title since 2020.

Meanwhile, Arsenal faced a more dramatic encounter at Wolves. The Gunners, missing captain Martin Ødegaard due to illness, had Myles Lewis-Skelly controversially sent off just before halftime for a tackle that stopped a Wolves counterattack. The challenge, deemed by the referee to be a “serious foul play,” resulted in the 18-year-old defender’s early exit. Arsenal protested, arguing that the tackle was too far from goal to merit a red card.

Despite being down to 10 men, Arsenal pressed on and got the winning goal in the 74th minute. Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori struck with a half-volley that found the far post, securing the win for the Gunners. Wolves, too, were reduced to 10 players in the 70th minute when Joao Gomes received a second yellow card for a foul on Jurrien Timber.

In other Premier League action, Bournemouth continued their strong run, thumping Nottingham Forest 5-0 at home. Dango Ouattara’s hat-trick was the highlight of the match, as Andoni Iraola’s side stretched their unbeaten streak to 11 games, moving up to sixth place in the standings. Their victory ended Forest’s impressive eight-match unbeaten streak.

Newcastle also had a strong showing, moving into fourth place with a 3-1 win at Southampton. Alexander Isak was in top form, scoring twice, while Sandro Tonali added a third to secure the victory for the Magpies.

Everton celebrated manager David Moyes’ milestone of 700 Premier League games with a 1-0 win at Brighton. Moyes became just the third manager in Premier League history to reach this achievement, following Arsène Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson. The Toffees earned the victory thanks to Iliman Ndiaye’s penalty after a handball by Brighton’s Joel Veltman.
