Ruben Amorim, Manchester United’s manager, has acknowledged that even winning the Europa League cannot salvage what has been a disastrous season for the club.
United, who face Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals, are struggling in the Premier League, sitting 14th with just 39 points, and will need to win the Europa League to secure a Champions League spot for next season.
“We know that nothing is going to save our season but this can be huge,” Amorim said in a pre-match press conference.
Despite their poor domestic form, United’s European performance remains a glimmer of hope. Amorim admitted, “Winning a trophy and also to get in the Champions League…could change a lot of things in our club.”
Midfielder Manuel Ugarte echoed his manager’s sentiments, acknowledging that while a Europa League win wouldn’t fix all issues, it would secure their place in next year’s Champions League.
Amorim also pointed out the ongoing challenges, stressing that the club needs to improve recruitment, academy development, and consistency to return to its former glory.
