An ex-convict who was granted clemency by Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has been rearrested for allegedly stealing a plasma television. The suspect, identified as Omisakin Sunday, is accused of committing the crime barely weeks after receiving the state pardon.
Governor Adeleke had, in late 2024, granted clemency to 53 inmates convicted of various crimes, including Omisakin, who was pardoned unconditionally.
However, Omisakin is now facing fresh charges of burglary and theft after allegedly breaking into a residence in the Iludun area of Osogbo and stealing a plasma television valued at ₦600,000, which belongs to one Damilare Shittu.
The matter was brought before Magistrate Adeyeba Adekanmi at the Osogbo Magistrate Court, where Omisakin was arraigned on two counts: burglary and theft. These offenses are said to be in violation of Sections 411(1)(2) and 390(9) of the Osun State Criminal Code.
During the court proceedings, Omisakin pleaded not guilty to the charges. However, the prosecuting officer, Inspector Kayode Adeoye, objected to his bail request, arguing that the suspect had recently been released from prison on clemency and had wasted no time engaging in criminal activity again.
Inspector Adeoye noted that Omisakin’s actions demonstrated a disregard for the opportunity given to him by the Governor’s pardon, which aimed to reintegrate ex-convicts into society. He urged the court to deny the bail application to prevent the suspect from committing further offenses.
Magistrate Adeyeba, in her ruling, refused to grant Omisakin bail. She ordered that he be remanded in correctional custody and adjourned the case to February for further hearing.
