Ex-Minister Kabiru Turaki Granted Bail After Arraignment for Alleged Adultery

A Federal Capital Territory Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to former Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Kabiru Taminu Turaki (SAN), in the sum of N1 million. His bail came after his arraignment on allegations of false marriage, adultery, and criminal intimidation.

Turaki appeared in court on Thursday and pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him. The case was based on an investigation following a petition filed on August 9, 2024. The Deputy Inspector General of Police in Abuja led the prosecution.

The prosecutor noted that Turaki was accused of deceiving a woman into believing they were lawfully married. He also faced allegations of adultery and threats, which were said to be in violation of Sections 383, 387, and 389 of the Penal Code.

The First Information Report (FIR) detailed the allegations, stating: “You, Barrister Kabiru Taminu Turaki (SAN), between December 2014 and August 2016, deceitfully cohabited with Ms Hadiza Musa Bafta at a hotel called Han’s Place.

“You also cohabited with her at Ideal Home Holiday, Asokoro, between August 2016 and November 2021. You rented an apartment for her at No. 12 Clement Akpagbo Close, Guzape, in November 2021 and made her believe you were married to her. You continuously had sexual relations with her, which resulted in the birth of a baby girl.

“You abandoned Hadiza Musa Baffa and her child, denying paternity. You also threatened to use your influence and position to harm the mother and child.”

Following the reading of the charges, the prosecuting counsel, Chijioke Okorie, asked the court for a trial date. The defense lawyer, A. I. Mohammed, did not object but requested bail for his client, assuring the court that Turaki would be available when needed.

After considering the request, Magistrate Abubakar Jega granted Turaki bail with conditions. He was required to provide two sureties who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and present proof of residence.

The court scheduled the trial to begin on March 11, 2025.
