Ex-Ondo PDP Candidate, Ajayi Denies Joining ADC Coalition

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the November 16, 2024, Ondo State election, Agboola Ajayi, says he has no intention of leaving PDP to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Ajayi made this known in a statement that he signed alongside eight other key PDP leaders in Ondo State on Wednesday in Akure. The statement was shared with journalists by Bakkita Bello, who is the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the party in the state. It described the rumour of his defection as both false and misleading.

“We understand that recent media narratives and the movements of some political figures have created an atmosphere of uncertainty and as well raised questions amongst some of our members,” the statement read.

The PDP leaders noted that neither the national body nor the Ondo State branch of the party had started any merger talks or alliances with other political parties. They reassured party members and supporters that PDP in Ondo remains solid and united.

“We wish to, as leaders of PDP in Ondo State, offer clarity, encouragement, and reassurance to all of you who have stood with PDP through thick and thin,” the statement added.

They also noted that the party’s main focus remains on winning elections to bring positive change to the state and country. According to them, PDP’s goal is to “rescue, rebuild, and reposition Nigeria and the state through the ballot in the coming elections.”

Members were asked to stay loyal and not be carried away by rumours or misleading reports. The statement pointed out that PDP’s strength does not come from media stories or quick alliances but from the dedication and faithfulness of its members.

“So, we encourage those that might have been misled to believing that the PDP was a part of any coalition or merger to have a rethink and retrace their steps,” the statement said.

It further reminded members of the importance of unity and staying focused, describing PDP as “not just a political party—it is a movement of hope, of democracy, and of purposeful governance.”

The PDP leadership stressed that party structures are still strong and functional in all the 203 wards and 18 local government areas of Ondo State, ensuring that the party is ready for the coming elections.

Those who signed the statement with Ajayi include Sen. Bode Olajumoke and Eddy Olafeso, who are BOT members; Debo Ologunagba, National Publicity Secretary; Clement Faboyede, NEC member; Olajide Oguntodu, Minority Leader at the Ondo State House of Assembly; Ladi Omotehinse, Chairman of the Forum of PDP LG Chairmen; Bakkita Bello, the State Caretaker Committee Chairman; and Oluseye Olujimi, Secretary of the State Caretaker Committee.
