Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has urged commercial drivers to avoid transporting flammable materials to ensure the safety of passengers and prevent future tragedies.
This warning comes after a devastating accident on Tuesday along the Abeokuta-Sagamu expressway near Muhammadu Buhari Estate. A white Mazda bus, registered as KJA949YJ, was carrying a filled gas cylinder when it exploded, causing a fire that claimed the lives of 16 people.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, Governor Abiodun noted that the accident could have been prevented if proper safety measures were followed. He stressed the need for careful handling and transportation of highly flammable substances, including gas and petroleum products.
The governor also called on the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) to take responsibility for educating their members about the dangers of transporting hazardous materials. He urged them to enforce safety regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the potential dangers linked to the transportation of flammable materials. As we grapple with the aftermath of this tragedy, it is essential for all stakeholders—drivers, unions, and regulatory bodies—to work collaboratively towards ensuring that such incidents do not recur,” he said.
Abiodun extended his condolences to the families of the victims, offering prayers for comfort and strength as they cope with their loss. He also encouraged communities to remain vigilant and follow safety regulations to prevent further disasters.
