Explosion Rocks Borno Military Barracks

There was tension in Maiduguri, Borno State, in the early hours of Thursday, after a series of explosions erupted inside the Giwa Military Barracks.

According to eyewitnesses, the blasts occurred around 12:05 a.m., sending shockwaves through nearby neighborhoods. Many residents were awakened by the loud booms and the sudden glow of red flares lighting up the sky above the barracks.

The source of the explosion, as confirmed by locals, was traced to the armoury section within the military facility.

A resident, Rakiya Garba, who lives close to the scene, noted the arrival of fire service personnel soon after the incident began.

“We are safe, but we are in fear. The explosion is coming from inside the barracks. It is not an attack because we are not hearing gunshots. However, it has been a sporadic explosion,” she said.

There was widespread speculation across social media about a possible terrorist attack. However, authorities were quick to calm such fears.

The Deputy Governor of Borno State, Dr. Umar Kadafur, addressed the situation, stating that the explosions were due to a fire that broke out within the armoury and not the result of any external attack.

Dr. Kadafur noted that the incident was under control and urged the public to remain calm and indoors.

“Security operatives are on top of the situation,” he said. His statement came as a reassurance to residents already on edge due to the history of conflict in the region.
