FAAN Reacts To Viral Video of Immigration Officer Begging Money at Airport

The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has issued a response to a viral video showing a Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) officer soliciting money from a passenger at the airport. The incident has sparked widespread criticism and raised concerns about corruption within the ranks of airport officials.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, the Managing Director and Chief Executive of FAAN, condemned the behavior as wholly unacceptable. She emphasized that such conduct does not align with the values and standards FAAN strives to uphold at Nigerian airports.

The video, which quickly gained traction on social media, depicts an unidentified NIS officer repeatedly asking a tourist for money at the International Airport. The officer even suggested accepting card payments, which further exacerbated public outrage. The incident has led many Nigerians to voice their frustration, pointing to it as a sign of deeper systemic issues within the country’s public services.

Public opinion has been harsh, with many seeing the officer’s actions as a disgrace not only to the individual but also to the Nigerian government. Critics argue that if immigration officers received adequate compensation, such embarrassing situations might be avoided.

In her statement, Kuku confirmed that the implicated officer has been removed from his post and is undergoing disciplinary procedures within the NIS. She assured the public that FAAN is dedicated to preserving the integrity and professionalism of all personnel operating at their facilities.

“I have seen the disturbing video circulating of a Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) official begging a passenger for money at the airport,” Kuku said in the statement.

“I want to ensure you know that this behavior is completely unacceptable and does not reflect the passenger experience we hope to provide at our terminals.

“The officer in question has been immediately withdrawn from duty at the terminal and is currently facing disciplinary action with the NIS.

“We are committed to maintaining the integrity and professionalism of all personnel working at our airports.

“I would like to ask all passengers to report any similar incidents or seek immediate support through the phone numbers and QR codes provided below.

“Your safety and comfort are our top priorities, and we will take every necessary step to ensure a pleasant travel experience for everyone,” he added.
