A group of female lawyers, under the banner of Female Lawyers in Politics, visited the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mrs. Mojisola Meranda, to offer their support and congratulations. The visit took place on Tuesday at the Assembly Complex and marked a moment of celebration for the first female Speaker in the history of the Lagos Assembly.
The delegation, which includes professional female lawyers dedicated to supporting women’s involvement in politics, was formed in 2018. Their mission is to mentor and inspire women in the legal field to pursue leadership roles, including political positions.
During the visit, Barrister Abimbola Jack-Oladigba, President of the group, expressed her excitement about Meranda’s appointment. “We are here to felicitate Madam Speaker. It is a thing of joy and a milestone achievement to have the first female Speaker in our time, and we are glad to witness it. We couldn’t hide our excitement and had to come forward to share our felicitations with the House. Congratulations once again,” Jack-Oladigba said.
Barrister Omowunmi Ogungbaigbe, the Secretary of the group, also spoke at the event and emphasized the importance of Meranda’s success in surpassing the achievements of her predecessors. “We are here to foster collaboration with your office. Being the first female Speaker in Lagos State, your achievements must supersede those of all your predecessors. We are here behind you. Before you even look back, we are here to serve you. We wish you well in health and wealth,” Ogungbaigbe remarked.
Kehinde Joseph, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Alimosho Constituency 02, urged women to speak out in support of Meranda. “Women should stand up and speak up for Madam Speaker. Personally, I expected more from the womenfolk. We want to see you speak up for her,” Joseph said. He added, “We are 36 male members, and we chose her based on her antecedents and achievements. All of us made a resolution that it was either her or no one else.”
In her response, Speaker Mojisola Meranda thanked the female lawyers for their visit and support. She expressed her hope for continued collaboration and assured the group of her commitment to meeting their expectations. “I know this is going to be the beginning of a wonderful relationship. I can assure you that as you have believed in me, I will not disappoint my gender and Lagos State in general. Thank you so much for your support,” Meranda concluded.
