A ferry operated by the Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) was engulfed in flames early Thursday morning at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu, Lagos. The incident caused widespread panic as several passengers were injured during the frightening ordeal.
The fire reportedly started after an explosion in the engine compartment of the vessel. Sources close to the incident mentioned that the blast led to a massive fire that quickly spread throughout the boat, reaching the cabin and trapping a few of the passengers inside.
“There was a huge explosion from the engine side of the boat, and it resulted in a huge fire which engulfed the boat,” a source stated. Although the exact cause of the explosion remains unclear, investigations are still underway to determine what led to the fire.
The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has confirmed the incident, noting that the fire broke out at around 6:45 AM as the LAGFERRY vessel, named “Igbega Eko,” was on its way to Victoria Island. LASWA’s emergency response team acted quickly, arriving at the scene to help manage the situation alongside LAGFERRY staff and other first responders.
“We are pleased to report that all passengers and crew on board were evacuated safely, though four passengers sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving medical attention,” LASWA confirmed in a statement.
The authority added that it is conducting a detailed investigation into the cause of the fire. They are working closely with LAGFERRY and other relevant stakeholders to ensure a thorough assessment of the incident.
