The Federal Government has directed an immediate investigation into the prison break at the Koton Karfe Custodial Centre in Kogi State. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, resulted in the escape of at least 12 inmates.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, described the event as unfortunate and assured Nigerians that efforts were already underway to recapture all fleeing prisoners. He stated that the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) would use its biometric database and advanced technology to track the escaped inmates.
In a statement issued on Monday by his media aide, Babatunde Alao, the minister also directed the Acting Controller General of the NCoS, Sylvester Ndidi, to visit the affected facility in Kogi. Ndidi was tasked with assessing the situation and conducting a full audit to determine how the escape happened.
“We are on top of the situation. Our men are on ground in Kogi, and I have ordered a comprehensive audit of the situation,” the minister said.
Meanwhile, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, provided further details on the escape. He confirmed that the inmates managed to flee through the tower, raising concerns about the security measures in place at the facility.
Authorities have since launched a manhunt for the escapees, with security agencies working closely to track their movements. The incident has sparked discussions on the need for improved security in correctional centers across the country.
