FG Suspends 13 Enugu Students for Alleged Bullying

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a six-week suspension for 13 students from the Federal Government College (FGC) in Enugu. This decision follows the circulation of a video that showed students engaged in what appears to be bullying, prompting concern from education officials and the public.

The Ministry of Education, through its Director of Press and Public Relations, Folashade Boriowo, shared the news in a statement released in Abuja on Wednesday.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, took swift action after viewing the video, emphasizing the government’s commitment to maintaining safe and positive learning environments across federal schools nationwide.

According to the statement, a report on the incident described an assault involving a day student in SS1, reportedly taking place on November 7. This event gained wider attention after the video was posted on social media, sparking public outrage and concern for student safety.

The report read, ”The findings of the ministry, the incident involved the gang assault of an SS1 student (a day student) by a group of students on Nov. 7.

”The incident came to light showing the circulation of a disturbing video on social media platforms.

”In response, the Federal Ministry of Education established a disciplinary committee to investigate the matter.

”Based on the findings, all 13 students involved have been placed on a six-week suspension pending the report of the investigative committee.”

The Minister also directed the School-Based Management Committee to work closely with law enforcement to ensure a thorough investigation.

He suggested exploring any possible links to external influences that may have contributed to the students’ behavior. In addition, Dr. Alausa stated that the school would increase security measures by involving security agencies and revising current safety practices.

“Counseling and rehabilitation support will also be provided to promote students’ reintegration into a safe and positive school environment,” added the Minister.
