The Federal Government has taken action against two correctional officers after they were discovered trying to assist an inmate in unlawfully obtaining an international passport.
The incident, which was brought to light through modern monitoring systems introduced by the Nigeria Immigration Service, led to the suspension of the two personnel from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
The development was confirmed in a statement released by the Public Relations Officer of the NCoS, Deputy Controller of Corrections Umar Abubakar, on Saturday, June 21, 2025.
According to Abubakar, the attempted fraud was uncovered through the automated passport application system and other new reforms that are part of ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Interior to clean up irregularities across its departments.
These reforms have allowed for better tracking of unusual activities and have encouraged cooperation between the Correctional Service and other agencies within the ministry.
The suspended officers were reportedly involved in trying to secure an international passport for an inmate — an action that goes against the rules and code of conduct guiding custodial institutions in the country.
The discovery was made about two weeks prior and immediately raised concerns about integrity and proper supervision within correctional facilities.
Abubakar noted that “necessary disciplinary actions were taken including the suspension of the two correctional personnel implicated in the incident by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board chaired by the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.”
The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, also responded to the situation by reaffirming his resolve to enforce accountability and professionalism within the system. He noted that the Correctional Service will continue to operate with transparency and will not tolerate any act of corruption or betrayal of public trust.
“The Service categorically states that any personnel found engaging in acts of misconduct, corruption, or sabotage will be shown the way out of the system,” he added.
