President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians to cancel planned nationwide protests, assuring the public that the government is working diligently to ease economic hardships.
The President’s message was delivered during a National Council of Traditional Rulers meeting held in Abuja on Monday, July 22, 2024. The speech was given by George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, who represented President Tinubu.
The President stressed the importance of patience and unity during this challenging period. He criticized those who are using the country’s economic struggles as a basis to incite protests, suggesting that such actions could further destabilize the nation.
Instead, Tinubu called on Nigerians to remain calm and support the government’s reform efforts, which he believes are crucial for long-term prosperity.
“We should learn from the experiences of countries like India and Sudan,” Tinubu said. “With over 200 million people, we cannot afford such discord.”
Highlighting the government’s efforts to mitigate economic difficulties, Tinubu outlined several initiatives aimed at providing relief to the populace.
These measures include the procurement of Compressed Natural Gas vehicles to reduce transportation costs, the introduction of a student loan scheme to support education, the distribution of palliatives to the needy, and the provision of agricultural inputs like tractors and fertilizer to boost food production.
In addition to economic relief, the President reiterated his administration’s commitment to enhancing security across the country. He appealed to traditional rulers to foster peace within their communities and to encourage the youth to avoid violent demonstrations.
