Fire Guts Seven-Storey Building in Lagos, No Casualties Reported

A fire broke out on Thursday at a seven-storey commercial building in the Iddo area of Lagos Island. The incident, which occurred at Iddo House, a property belonging to AG Leventis, led to significant damage but fortunately resulted in no casualties.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) Director, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed the incident in a statement. She noted that the fire began at approximately 10 a.m. and was traced to an archival room on the first floor of the building. The structure houses several businesses, including commercial banks and the Nigeria Bottling Company PLC.

“A fire outbreak on the first floor of a seven-storey commercial building belonging to AG Leventis, Iddo House, Iddo, via Oyingbo, Lagos, has been extinguished by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service,” Adeseye said.

She further noted that the Nigeria Bottling Company PLC reported the fire at 10:22 a.m. Firefighters from the Sari Iganmu and Ebute Elefun Fire Stations quickly responded and managed to contain the flames before they could spread beyond the archival room, which covers approximately 108 square meters.

Initial investigations suggest that the fire was caused by rising room temperature, leading to self-ignition in the confined space. However, authorities are still conducting further inquiries to determine the exact cause.

“While investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, preliminary findings suggest self-ignition in the confined archival space due to rising room temperature. Fortunately, there are no reported casualties in an operation that has since been completed,” Adeseye stated.
