Fire Razes Shops, Property Worth Millions In Yobe Market

A devastating fire broke out early morning at the bustling Kaiya Kaiya Market in Gashua, Yobe State, reducing several shops and goods worth millions of Naira to ashes. The tragic incident has left many traders counting their losses and struggling to come to terms with the sudden destruction of their livelihoods.

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) confirmed the incident, stating that efforts are underway to assess the damage and provide assistance to affected traders. The agency is working in close partnership with the Bade Local Government Council to determine the level of resources required to support the victims. Many of the affected shop owners depend on daily sales to sustain their families.

In a statement addressing the incident, SEMA remarked, “We are deeply saddened by the devastating fire incident in Gashua and extend our heartfelt sympathies to the victims and their families… As we prepare for a comprehensive response, we urge all communities to stay vigilant this harmattan season.”

Senator Musa Mustapha of Yobe East also expressed concern over the increasing frequency of market fires in the state. Writing on his official Facebook page, he urged traders to exercise caution during the harmattan season, which is known for its dry and windy conditions. “I reiterate my call to our marketers to be extraordinary careful in handling fire-prone materials,” he stated.
