Five Arrested Over Sale of Two-Week-Old Baby in Lagos

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested five suspects linked to the abduction and sale of a newborn baby, just two weeks after his birth. The arrest was made by officers attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), following a report made earlier this month.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the police spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the case began when a man approached the Ajah Police Division on May 5, 2025. He reported that his 16-year-old cousin, identified as Miss Happiness, had gone missing under suspicious circumstances.

The teenager, who was reportedly pregnant by an unknown man, had been taken in by a woman named Nonye Osi due to the family’s financial struggles. However, the situation took a darker turn when Miss Happiness disappeared and could not be contacted. After a period of searching, she was eventually found, but without her newborn child.

The police said, “Nonye Osi conspired with others to relocate Miss Happiness to an unknown location. When she was eventually found, she was no longer pregnant, and the baby was missing.”

Following the complaint, the case was handed over to the SCID for detailed investigation. The police revealed that five individuals—Nonye Osi, Akintan Adedayo, Jimoh Bashiru, Elizabeth Bishop, and Bukola Oladapo—were taken into custody. According to the authorities, the suspects worked together to sell the baby for a reported N3 million.

After what the police called “painstaking efforts,” detectives traced the missing child to the Agemuwo area of Badagry in Lagos. The baby boy was found in good health and is currently in the care of the Gender/Anti-Human Trafficking Unit. Plans are being made to reunite him with his biological mother.

“The two-week-old baby boy was found safe and sound. The Gender/Anti-Human Trafficking Unit is currently handling the case and attending to the baby, who is in good health, pending his reunion with his biological mother,” Hundeyin stated.

The police noted that investigations are still ongoing to find any other people involved. They added that the Lagos Police Command remains focused on protecting residents and fighting crimes involving children.
