Five Nabbed Over Diversion of N184m Worth of Agrochemicals in Kebbi

Operatives of the Kebbi State Police Command have arrested five individuals suspected of unlawfully diverting agrochemical products valued at over N184 million. The products belong to Springfield Agro Limited, a company based in Lagos. The incident unfolded after the company reported a major diversion of its shipment intended for delivery to Suleja/Abuja.

According to the police, the shipment, which included 1,925 cartons of Roundup 360XL herbicide, never reached its designated destination. Instead, the goods were allegedly rerouted and sold off at discounted prices in Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital.

The Kebbi State Police Command acted swiftly following the company’s complaint. A team from the State Criminal Investigation Department was assigned to the case and began tracking the suspects. Their efforts led to the arrest of five men believed to be involved in the scheme.

The suspects have been identified as Nura Abdullahi, 45; Nura Muhammad, 50; Bashar Abubakar, 45; and Sanusi Bojo, 43 — all residents of Birnin Kebbi. The fifth suspect, Aliyu Muhammad, 48, is from Kashin Zama village in Aliero Local Government Area.

Police authorities say that the key player behind the diversion, the truck driver named Alhaji Bala, is still on the run. He is suspected to have planned and executed the illegal change of route and sale of the agrochemical products. A manhunt for him is ongoing.

In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Nafiu Abubakar, speaking on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, it was noted that the case is still under investigation and further updates will be provided as more facts are uncovered.

“The suspects are currently in custody, and investigations are continuing to determine the full scope of the operation and identify any additional accomplices,” the statement read.

Springfield Agro Limited, the owner of the diverted goods, deals in agricultural products, including fertilizers and herbicides. The company had contracted the truck to move the goods from Lagos to Suleja/Abuja but became suspicious after losing contact with the delivery team and not receiving the shipment as expected.

Security officials urge members of the public with information about the whereabouts of Alhaji Bala to come forward. The authorities have assured that any useful tip that leads to his arrest will be treated with confidentiality.
