Nigerian rapper and actor Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has triggered widespread debate across social media platforms after making a bold statement that questions a long-held religious belief.
On Sunday, the award-winning entertainer posted on his official X (formerly known as Twitter) account a short but powerful message: “Fornication is not a sin.”
That single sentence quickly caught the attention of thousands and sent shockwaves through the Nigerian online community. Within minutes, the post had gone viral, with users on both sides of the moral and religious spectrum sharing their views.
Many took strong positions, arguing either in support of or against the controversial opinion. The debate has since moved beyond just one post, growing into a national conversation that touches on faith, personal choice, and changing cultural values.
One user, VeryJules, defended the artist’s remark by offering a theological explanation: “He’s not chasing clout. Some group of Christian thinkers believe that two consenting individuals engaging in this behavior cannot be considered as sinners. They argue that it is the law of OT not NT they also say it is a man made law in this case, PAUL’S law in NT not divine. Run away from them ooh FORNICATION is a sin.”
In contrast, LucasMolade responded with a firm rejection, saying, “Remove Christian from the name. Christian means Christ-like, and Christ didn’t think like this.” Another user, BintDija, linked Falz’s opinion to his personal life, commenting, “No wonder you no gree marry.”
Others used the opportunity to point out what they see as society’s double standards. Silvah101 wrote, “Most of y’all are just certified hypocrites. You’re out here condemning this tweet yet you indulge in it.”
Meanwhile, some users took a more legalistic stance. Technnick noted, “Sin is for religious people, and fornication to them is a sin. Fornication is a legal act in our country. Leave sin for people wey know about am jare.”
However, not everyone is ready to challenge traditional beliefs. Winifunds stated simply: “We all wish it wasn’t, but it is. Fornication is a sin.”
