The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Fire Service worked together on Tuesday to control a fire caused by a burning gas truck at Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Their quick response helped prevent further damage and possible loss of lives.
The FRSC, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, noted that their timely intervention played a key role in managing the situation.
The accident happened during peak traffic hours and involved 11 men. Five people sustained injuries, while two lives were lost. The crash caused heavy traffic congestion as emergency responders worked to clear the scene.
Reports suggest that a mechanical failure, specifically brake failure in one of the vehicles, triggered the accident. The impact led to a chain reaction, resulting in a multiple-vehicle collision. In total, 15 vehicles were affected, showing the severity of the crash.
The FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, reacted to the incident, expressing concern over the avoidable nature of such crashes. He noted the importance of following strict safety measures, especially for vehicles transporting hazardous materials.
Mohammed also issued a warning to fleet managers, vehicle owners, and drivers, urging them to ensure proper maintenance and safety checks to prevent such accidents. He stressed that violations of road safety regulations would lead to strict penalties, in line with the National Road Traffic Regulations.
The statement further noted that the FRSC would continue to use its resources and expertise to manage emergencies and protect road users.
