Gov. Abba Yusuf Approves ₦15.6 Billion Payment for Over 3,000 Former Kano Councillors

The Kano State Government has approved a ₦15.6 billion payment package for more than 3,000 former councillors who served in the 44 local government areas between 2014 and 2024. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf gave the go-ahead for the funds, which are meant to cover outstanding gratuities, leave allowances, and accommodation claims.

According to Ibrahim Adam, the Special Adviser on Information to the Governor, the payments will be made in three phases from April to June 2025. The beneficiaries include councillors from three separate political cycles: 2014–2017, 2018–2020, and 2021–2024 — all of whom served under the previous administration led by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

The Governor’s decision is seen as a major step toward correcting long-standing issues involving unpaid entitlements. Adam stated, “The approval of ₦15.6 billion is in fulfillment of Governor Abba K. Yusuf’s commitment to ensuring that all outstanding entitlements owed to our dedicated public servants are fully paid.”

He also noted that this move reflects the current administration’s belief in fairness and justice for those who served the people in various capacities. “It is a matter of principle and justice to uphold the dignity of those who have served in elected positions,” he added.
